Mam wrażenie, które powoduje u mnie stan niemal depresyjny, że niedostatecznie zachęciłam was do udziału w festiwalu Jazz à Vienne. Bo gdy dla mnie jest to źródło tak znakomitej zabawy, mam gorące pragnienie, by ta radość stała się udziałem jak największej liczby osób! Vienne to urocze miasteczko z bogatą historią, sięgającą końca poprzedniej ery (więcej o Vienne dowiecie się z tego posta), a festiwal, organizowany tu corocznie już po raz trzydziesty szósty to chyba jedna z najlepszych imprez muzycznych w jakich miałam okazję brać udział. W tej chwili jesteśmy prawie na półmetku festiwalu, więc ciągle macie okazję zobaczyć i – przede wszystkim – usłyszeć go na własne oczy! Moje osobiste wrażenia znajdziecie na końcu artykułu.
Dlaczego warto?
Odkąd w zeszłym roku przypadkiem trafiłam do Vienne w czasie trwania festiwalu, a dziewczyna z biura turystycznego zachęciła nas do obejrzenia wieczornego koncertu w Jardin de Cybèle, marzyłam o tym, by tu wrócić. W całym mieście wyrastają mniejsze i większe sceny, gdzie można posłuchać świetnej muzyki patrząc jednocześnie na niesamowite rzymskie zabytki (większość koncertów odbywa się albo w ich pobliżu, albo wręcz w ich środku). Macie więc zagwarantowaną ucztę zarówno dla uszu, jak i oczu. Na festiwal zjeżdżają wykonawcy z całego świata, z bardzo różnorodnym programem (słowa „jazz” w nazwie festiwalu nie należy traktować zbyt dosłownie). Mój wczorajszy wieczór udowodnił, że oprócz słuchania muzyki można tu też dać się porwać tanecznemu szaleństwu, a – co mnie właściwie zaskoczyło – publiczności w Vienne wcale nie trzeba było mocno do tańca zachęcać i już w czasie pierwszego utworu w wieczornym koncercie parkiet pod sceną się zapełnił. Warto podkreślić, że zdecydowana większość koncertów jest całkowicie bezpłatna!
Sceny na Jazz à Vienne
Są trzy główne sceny:
Théàtre Antique – największa scena, koncerty biletowane (ceny: 36, 43 lub 48 EUR w zależności od koncertu za normalny bilet). Otwarcie obiektu dwie godziny przed występami. Informacje pod numerem telefonu: 04.74.78.87.87.
Scènes de Cybèle – tu występy odbywają się (przynajmniej teoretycznie) w trzech „blokach”: les Midis de Jazz à Vienne (od 12:30 do 13:30), les Après-midis du Jazz (od 16 do 19:45) i le Kiosque – od 20:30. W rzeczywistości warto sprawdzić w programie o której konkretnie można spodziewać się koncertów (na przykład wczorajszy występ Bixiga 70 zaczął się o 20:00, ale może to z powodu meczu Francja-Islandia…).
Club de Minuit – to miejsce dla najwytrwalszych fanów. Jak wskazuje nazwa, koncerty tutaj odbywają się o północy – lecz nie codziennie. Szczegółów szukajcie na stronie festiwalu (link na końcu artykułu).
Oprócz tego, czekają na was inne, małe sceny – na przykład obok świątyni Augusta i Liwii czy na placu przed miejskim ratuszem, a także stowarzyszone wydarzenia, na przykład koncerty w Musée Gallo-Romain (które polecam nawet i bez tego) czy wykłady i pokazy filmów dokumentalnych, ale nie ukrywajmy – w festiwalu chodzi głównie o muzykę, i to jest najważniejsze!
Informacje praktyczne
Koncerty odbywają się bez względu na warunki atmosferyczne. Bilety na koncerty w teatrze antycznym można kupić w internecie – na stronie festiwalu (link poniżej). Oprócz zwykłych biletów, dostępny jest tak zwany „Abonament”, czyli bilet na siedem dowolnie wybranych koncertów w cenie 180 EUR oraz pakiet Trio, czyli trzy koncerty w cenie 100 EUR (po jednym z każdej kategorii cenowej).
Dla dojeżdżających z Lyonu jest specjalna oferta od SNFC TER Rhône-Alpes: z 50% zniżką przyjedziecie na koncert pociągiem, a po koncercie wrócicie autobusem (szczegóły oraz zakup biletów na stronie: http://www.ter.sncf.com/rhone-alpes/loisirs/evenements/jazz-vienne). Jeśli wybierzecie podróż samochodem, pamiętajcie, że część ulic w centrum miasta może być zamknięta. Najlepiej będzie zostawić samochód na bezpłatnym parkingu Intermarché Malissol na wschodzie miasta, skąd do Teatru Antycznego podwiezie was bezpłatny autobus (tzw. navette – kursy tam: poniedziałek-sobota od 18:15 do 20:30 co 15 minut, w niedziele od 17:15 do 19:30 co 15 minut; kursy z powrotem: przez godzinę po zakończeniu koncertu, 13 lipca (wieczór All night Jazz) – wyłącznie od 2 do 3:00 nad ranem. Na terenie Scènes de Cybèle polecam zajrzeć do Côté Marmite z przemiłą i szybką obsługą, która oferuje także dania wegetariańskie, i gdzie powiedziano mi, że będę czekać na zapiekankę pięć minut, a czekałam dwie.
Moje odczucia
Chyba już dałam wystarczająco do zrozumienia, że ten festiwal niesamowicie mi się podoba? Wczoraj uczestniczyłam w dwóch koncertach, obu w Jardin de Cybèle. Najpierw występował zespół Djoukil z Lyonu – chłopaki w muszkach porwali do swinga i boogie nie tylko zespół taneczny, ale także publikę, choć w zasadzie dużo miejsca do tańca nie przewidziano. Świetnie się bawiłam, nawet nie tańcząc, którego to talentu niestety mi poskąpiono.
Po krótkim zwiedzaniu wróciliśmy na 19:00 na kolejny koncert, który… się nie odbył. Za to o 20:00 na scenę weszli Bixiga 70 – dziesięciu cudownych facetów z Sao Paulo (choć tak naprawdę pochodzą z różnych miejsc na świecie, co słychać w ich muzyce), którzy od pierwszego utworu porwali publikę fuzją afrykańskich i południowo-amerykańskich rytmów. Moją uwagę zaprzątała sekcja perkusyjna, z bardzo przystojnym i nieprawdopodobnie żywiołowym bębniarzem, oraz sekcja dęta, która oprócz tego że grała, to jeszcze uskuteczniała układy choreograficzne. Gdzieś z tyłu, nie ustępując reszcie, grali gitarzyści, z których jeden stylem gry silnie kojarzył mi się z Santaną (czego niestety zapomniałam powiedzieć mu po koncercie).
Całość tworzyła niezwykle zgraną i utalentowaną całość. Chłopaki byli cudowni. Tak cudowni, że po koncercie poleciałam kupić ich płytę, której od wczoraj przesłuchałam już ze cztery razy (choć na koncercie odbiór jest zupełnie inny – działa magia muzyki na żywo, nagłośnienie, atmosfera, no i widok pozytywnych i niezwykle zaangażowanych muzyków!). Cała radość jaką zespół miał z grania, udzieliła się publiczności. Poniżej krótki filmik z ich występu, żebyście zrozumieli o czym mówię. I have a feeling, that makes me almost depressed, that I insufficiently invited you to participate in the festival Jazz à Vienne. It’s a source of such great fun for me, that I have a burning desire to share this joy with as many people as I can! Vienne is a charming town with a rich history, dating back to the end of the previous era (you’ll learn more about Vienne from this post), and the festival that is organized here every year (now for a thirty-sixth time) is probably one of the best musical events in which I had the opportunity to participate. At the moment, we are almost at the halfway point of the festival, so you still have the opportunity to see and - above all - to hear it for yourself! You will find my personal impressions at the end of the article.
Why it’s worth coming here?
Since last year. when by accident I came to Vienne during the festival, and the girl from the tourist office has encouraged me to look at the evening concert in the Jardin de Cybèle, I dreamed of coming back here. Larger and smaller stages are built throughout the city, where you can listen to great music while looking at the amazing Roman monuments (most of the concerts take place close to them, or even in the middle). So you have a feast for both the ears and eyes guaranteed. The festival attracts performers from around the world, with a very diverse program (the word "jazz" in the name of the festival should not be taken too literally.) My last night here proved that in addition to listening to music one can also get carried away by dancing, and - what I'm actually surprised of – it wasn’t hard to encourage audience in Vienne to dance. It is worth noting that the vast majority of concerts is completely free!
Stages at Jazz à Vienne
There are three main scenes:
Théàtre Antique - the biggest scene, with ticketed concerts (three different prices: 36, 43 or 48 EUR for a normal ticket, depending on the artist performing). The theatre opens two hours before performances. Information: 04.74.78.87.87.
Scènes de Cybèle - here performances take place (at least theoretically) in three "blocks": les Midis de Jazz à Vienne (from 12:30 to 1:30 PM), les Après-midis du Jazz (from 4 to 7:45 PM) and le Kiosque – from 8:30 PM. In fact, it is worth checking in the program when in particular concerts will take place (for example, yesterday performance of Bixiga 70 began at 8 PM, but maybe it was because of the match France-Iceland ...).
Club de Minuit - a place for the most persistent fans. As the name implies, concerts are held here at midnight - but not every day. Look for details on the festival website (link at end of article).
In addition, other small scenes awaits you – e.g. near the Temple of Augustus and Livia and on the square in front of city hall. You also have the associated events, such as concerts at the Musée Gallo-Romain (which I recommend even without it), or lectures and documentaries, but let’s face it - the festival is mainly about music, and this is the most important!
Practical information
Concerts take place regardless of weather conditions. Tickets for concerts at the ancient theater can be purchased online - on the festival website (link below). In addition to regular tickets you also have so-called "Abonnement": a ticket to any seven selected concerts for the price of 180 EUR, and a package of Trio: three concerts for the price of 100 EUR (one of each price category).
For those coming from Lyon there’s a special offer from SNFC TER Rhône-Alpes: 50% discount for a round trip: you arrive by train to Vienne and after the concert you will return by bus (for details and to purchase tickets, visit: http://www.ter.sncf.com/rhone-alpes/loisirs/evenements/jazz-vienne). If you choose to travel by car, remember that some of the streets in the city center can be closed. It would be best to leave the car in the free parking Intermarché Malissol in the east of the city, from which a free shuttle bus will take you to the ancient theater (courses from parking: Monday-Saturday from 6:15 to 8:30 PM every 15 minutes, on Sundays from 5:15 to 7:30 PM every 15 minutes; courses back: during one hour after the end of the concert, on July 13th (All night Jazz evening) - only between 2 and 3 o'clock in the morning. Distances in the city (e.g. railway station - Théàtre Antique) are small enough to easily make them on foot.
Near the scenes you can buy hot and cold snacks, as well as ice cream and drinks - including beer naturally. In the Scènes de Cybèle I recommend to go to Côté Marmite with nice and fast service, which also offers vegetarian dishes, and where I was told that I would wait for pie five minutes and waited two.
My impressions
I think by now you understand how I feel about this festival. Yesterday I participated in two concerts, both in the Jardin de Cybèle. First, the band Djoukil of Lyon performed - the guys in bow ties played a swing and boogie making both professional dancers, and the audience dancing, although basically there wasn’t much space to dance. I had a great time even taking into account, that I didn’t dance, which I’m not gifted at.
After a short sightseeing we came back for the next concert at 7 PM, which ... did not happen. But at 8 PM Bixiga 70 - ten wonderful guys from Sao Paulo (though they really come from different places in the world, which can be heard in their music) came to the scene. From the very first track they amazed audience by fusion of African and South American rhythms. My attention was occupied by percussion section, with a very handsome and incredibly spontaneous drummer, and by horn section, which not only played, but also performed nice choreography during playing. Somewhere in the back, as good as the others, were guitar players, one of whom reminded me of Santana (which unfortunately I forgot to tell him after the concert).
This ten musicians formed an extremely talented and harmonious whole. The guys were wonderful. So wonderful that after the concert, I rushed to buy their album, which since yesterday I have already listened to four times (though in concert perception is quite different – I think it’s the magic of live music, sound, atmosphere, and view of the positive and extremely involved musicians!). The whole team gave their joy of playing to the audience. Below you can see a short video from their performance; watch it, and you’ll see what I mean. I hope that I invited you to visit the Festival Jazz à Vienne! Maybe I'm a little (ha ha) twisted, because the music is essentially an integral part of my life, but concerts works for me like a charger for the battery – though instead of electricity, I'm charged with positive energy! It so pleases me, that the music event with “jazz” in its name, where you won’t find Justin Bieber and other such "celebrities" (I do not dare call them musicians) attracts such a large and wonderful audience and for so many years remains that popular!

Maybe I'm a little (ha ha) twisted, because the music is essentially an integral part of my life, but concerts works for me like a charger for the battery – though instead of electricity, I'm charged with positive energy! It so pleases me, that the music event with “jazz” in its name, where you won’t find Justin Bieber and other such "celebrities" (I do not dare call them musicians) attracts such a large and wonderful audience and for so many years remains that popular!
