EURO 2016 - strefa kibica i mecz otwarcia / fan zone and the opening match

Ta przestrzeń w środku miasta przytłacza swoim ogromem i przygnębia pustką – samotny pomnik Ludwika XIV w centrum tylko pogłębia to wrażenie.

„Pure fan” zone: wschodni kraniec placu z głównym ekranem.
„The Village” – to miejsce na sektor VIPów, centrum mediowe, kioski informacyjne itp.

Jaka atmosfera panuje w strefie kibica?

Yes, it is this time again. Both football maniacs and occasional fans sit in front of TV, and the main topic of conversation is the number of goals scored and wasted opportunities. If you don’t share this football enthusiasm, and at the thought of football you feel sick, you can safely spare following post. Today, something for fans of EURO 2016!

This year's European championships in football are organized in France and one of the cities, which hosts the games, is Lyon. This is a great opportunity to explore the city, and feel the football atmosphere in the fan zone on Place Bellecour! Although I myself belong rather to the fans from case to case, I went there for the opening match France-Northern Ireland. Is it worth it? How fan zone in Lyon is organized? How do French cheer?

Organization of the fan zone in Lyon on EURO 2016

I must admit that I do’nt like Place Bellecour. This space in the middle of the city overwhelms by its vastness and depresses by its emptiness - a lone statue of Louis XIV in the center only deepens this impression. Only in times like this, when the space is needed to place two video screens and facilities (bars, toilets, shops, etc.) having such a square in the middle of the city begins to make sense. Currently, until the end of the championship, there is a heavily guarded fan zone here. It's no wonder - after the November attacks in Paris, the French are very serious about safety issues. Before entering the zone control awaits you - very similar to the one at the airports. Personal belongings must be placed on the tape, and yourself have to go through the gate with a metal detector. One can not take any large luggage - if you have one, you can leave it in special place. You also can’t take your own drinks to the zone, so if you were going to do so, you'd better give up the idea at the outset. The zone is divided into three parts:

• "Pure fan" zone: the eastern end of the square with the main screen. Here during the opening match the largest group of fans gathered, dressed in the colors of France. It opens half an hour before the game, closes one hour after its end.
• "Eat & Play zone: in the half-length of the square, just behind the statue of Louis XIV, there is a second, smaller video wall - so everyone has a chance for a good view. During the opening match most of the people here were sitting on earth, and the atmosphere was more like when watching TV on your own couch – just a very large one. As the name suggests, this area is close to the bars. The zone is open daily from noon until 23:45.
• "The Village" - a place for VIPs, media center, information kiosks etc.

When there aren’t any matches played, in the zone various entertainments are organized: sports tournaments (not just football!), meetings, shows and many others; full program can be found at this link.

As for the food you have sweet dishes (waffles, pancakes, etc.) and salty ones (hot dogs, chips, etc.), as well as cold snacks and drinks. You also can have a beer: in two versions - a regular lager (5 EUR per half liter) and soft one (4 EUR per half-liter - rather sweet, pretty tasty, if you like such things). Note – to the cost of beer you must add 1 EUR per cup, but the cup can be kept, and when you return to the area for another match or you just want a refill, service will pour you a beer  without having to pay for another cup. There is nothing to complain about - cups are solid – not like the majority of plastic crap served on such occasions.
Entrance to the area is free of charge.

How to get to the fan zone?

The easiest way is by metro - A line has a stop right on the spot. Remember, however, that part of the ways out from the subway is closed during EURO 2016. Also some buses have their routes changed (look for details on http://www.tcl.fr/Pages-annexes/Destination-Football). If you decide to take the car to the center (which I advise against), keep in mind that parking at the Place Bellecour is completely closed during EURO 2016 matches.

What is the atmosphere in the fan zone?

I spent the opening match with a mug of beer, sitting on the square warmed by the sun in the "Eat & Play" zone. There was neither a crowd dressed in the national colors nor loud chants; from what I've seen, the atmosphere in the "Pure fan" was more lively, while for us it looked like we just sat together on an exceptionally large couch watching TV (not that it bothered me). With two goals - especially with the second one - emotions erupted with renewed force: people broke up from their seats, the races went in motion, and from the throats you could hear shouts of joy and the Marseillaise; even I was euphoric, although normally this kind of collective excitement amuses me and basically I was indifferent to who will win this match. But this time and sang along with the French (just by chance I know the Marseillaise - did someone here recorded hymns to the matches of EURO 2012 with the Academic Choir of the Warsaw University? ...). The area is fun, the organization is very good, I did not see any brawls, fights or scuffles. Except for the safety issues everything is treated with a typical French leeway.  I've never been in any other fan zone, so I have no comparison, but here I’m eager to get back for other games.

Just a little thought: did anyone of you also had the impression, that French team came to the stadium straight from... the barber?

In the end I invite you to take the occasion of visiting the city (my suggestions can be found at this link: Lyon) and nearby area (near Lyon).
