O ile dobrze pamiętam, autor tamtego artykułu napisał, że zaprezentowane budynki „trzeba koniecznie zobaczyć przed śmiercią”; choć osobiście uważam, że to przesada, to Palais Idéal du Facteur Cheval (bo o nim mowa) warto włączyć w trasę zwiedzania, jeśli będziecie w okolicy.
In guidebooks the left bank of the river Rhone on the south of Lyon is a black hole. After all – who would stop along the way, when straight from the city you can take highway to Provence or to the Vercors plateau, or the Auvergne, or... But, if you happen to wander on the roads between Vienne and Valencia, go to the small town of Hauterives to see a unique building.
Myself, I wouldn’t even knew about this place, if not list of the ten strangest buildings in the world found somewhere in the depths of the internet. When it turned out that one of the places described in the article is just 80 km away from me, I knew that one day I will go there. If I remember correctly, the author of that article wrote that presented buildings "must be seen before dying"; although I personally think that is an exaggeration, I think that Palais Idéal du facteur Cheval (because that’s what I’m writing about) should be included in your tour route, if you are in the area.

Artysta, geniusz, megaloman? Niezwykły kształt wytworzony przez naturę przypomniał mu o dawnym marzeniu, powoli popadającym w zapomnienie: by zbudować niesamowity, bajkowy pałac. Było to w kwietniu 1879 roku; listonosz miał 43 lata. Kolejne 33 lata swojego życia poświęcił przekształcaniu marzeń w rzeczywistość, budując w swym ogrodzie pałac, znosząc budulec w koszach i taczkach, pracując głównie nocą przy świetle oliwnej lampy, samotny i nierozumiany, a często też krytykowany i wyszydzany.

An artist, a genius, a megalomaniac? Which word best describes the creator of this bizarre palace? Probably a little of each. Joseph Ferdinand Cheval, better known simply as a postman Cheval, was inspired by stone, on which he stumbled during one of his routes. The unusual shape produced by nature reminded him of an old dream, slowly sinking into oblivion: to build an fairy-tale palace beyond imagining. It was in April 1879; postman was 43. The next 33 years of his life he devoted to transforming dreams into reality, building the palace in his own garden, bearing building blocks in baskets and wheelbarrows, working mainly at night by the light of oil lamps, lonely and misunderstood, and often criticized and mocked. On one of the walls of the palace he engraved "The work of one man." It has been confirmed that this statement is entirely true.
Postman Cheval in the museum
On the left high corner you can see writing "Travail d'un seul homme"
In the building there are sculptures of animals, mythical beasts, as well as examples of architecture from around the world. You might be wondering how provincial nineteenth-century postman  knew how all this things look like, but the answer is simple – precisely because of his profession. During his 40 km long rounds (done on foot) he was able to observe nature, and ... watch delivered postcards and illustrated magazines, which were full of inspirations.

Postman finished his construction at the age of 76; another eight he spent on building a tomb for himself in a nearby cemetery (Cheval originally wanted to be buried in his palace, but the regulations did not allow this). During the construction first visitors came, and the postman showed them round his monument. His work has been inspiration for many artists, including Pablo Picasso.  In 1969 the palace was declared a historical monument as an example of naive art.
Here it says that nothing can be touched, but nowadays you can freely walk up the palace and watch every detail
It will take you about an hour to visit the palace and the little museum (which, however, is hard to explore, because it’s only in French, and for foreigners there are big boards with the translation prepared, which you have to carry with you and look for the corresponding footnotes by yourself). You can visit with the audiobook (for additional 2 euros) or with a detailed leaflet. However, if you only have time and a weather is fine, don’t make the mistake I did, and don’t come here only for an hour, because apart from visiting the palace you can go to a nearby cemetery (900 m from the palace), where you’ll find the postman tomb. You can also take a walk along the river (where you can also sunbathe and dabble) and on the surrounding area. There is camping here, children's playground and picnic area. Overall this is a pretty nice place to spend a lazy afternoon. Before you arrive, you can check out the website of the palace (address at the bottom of the post), if there aren’t any concert or a special exhibition that may be of interest to you.
